About Monkey in My Chair:
Along with the diagnosis of a serious illness comes time away from school. Whether it is a day here and there or maybe weeks and months at a time, this can be hard for the children and their classmates. Through the “Monkey in my Chair” program, children with a cancer diagnosis are provided with a “monkey kit” which includes a big stuffed monkey that takes their place in school when they are unable to be there. The kits also include a book to help teachers explain to students the situation their classmate is facing and how it affects them, a teacher companion guide and other items that can be utilized by the child and their classmates. All kits are sent out at no cost to the families or schools. Additionally, each “Monkey Kit” gives the children access to Monkey Message. Monkey Message is an online component that allows the sharing of pictures and documents to ensure the line of communication stays open between the patient and the classroom. More than 1,200 kits are sent out each year to children across the country. For more information visit monkeyinmychair.org
About the Program & Event
During the month of October, Dayton Mall will place 6 large, colorfully dressed, plush monkeys in artistically designed chairs throughout the mall. Each monkey & chair installation will have a different theme, using a key word relating to the battle with childhood cancer. Words such as Hero, Support, Brave and Strong would be used. Dayton Mall shoppers will be encouraged to snap selfies sitting in the “art chairs” placed next to the large monkeys, then post the photos on social media using the#monkeyinmymall. The month-long campaign will conclude with the Monkey Mania KidsFest, a monkey themed special event for families.
