DSPS
Membership
benefits the entire local art community-- not just one member. As long as DSPS continues to thrive, up-and-coming artists who join DSPS are provided a collection of advantages they cannot find elsewhere.

Friendship and classes . . .

DSPS
Member
        Meetings
-- just one type of social occasions where artists have the opportunity to socialize -- are held monthly in the Spring and Fall, providing speakers, demonstrations and art discussions. With prior arrangement, members may display their work, asking for feedback during the break following a speaker presentation. This fall our meetings will be held at the 48 High Street Gallery in St. Anne's Hill (except for September 2010, when they'll be held at the Patterson House on Brown Street in Oakwood).

For decades, the attractive and historic 48 High Street Gallery, owned by DSPS, has provided artists a location where their work may be exhibited
for a fraction of the cost charged by other venues. Members may rent a week's worth of gallery time at The 48 High Street Gallery to display their work for a total cost of $35. A large parking lot with no-cost parking is available to visitors of gallery, which is air conditioned and elegantly maintained.

No commission is ever charged by DSPS to members
who display their works at any of the locations DSPS provides, including our Online Gallery.

Where DSPS Members may exhibit and promote their artwork:

  •   The 48 High Street Gallery
    coordinated by Terry Hitt.
  •   The Cannery Art Design Center
Charges for DSPS members to display their work are $4.50 per month per lineal foot of wall space (see below). The coordinator for this is Jerry Edwards.
  •   The Dayton Convention Center
coordinated by Terry Hitt, currently seeking additional artists to display their work at the Convention Center. This display space is free to DSPS members for the first month.

  •    The DSPS Online Gallery
costs just $20 per year to participating DSPS member-artists who purchased a one-year membership. They can post 12 images of their artwork on a gallery page of their own. For more information contact Cynthia Rush.
    (Fiscal year is June-May.)
  •       DSPS Member shows
where DSPS members are charged just modest fees to enter at least two annual juried DSPS Member shows + one open competition with prize money awards
DSPS is constantly exploring possible new locations where members might display their work for little or no cost.

DSPS members who want to exhibit their work may rent the 48 High Street Gallery for $35 per week (non-members pay $100 per week). A large parking lot with no-cost parking is available to visitors of gallery, which is air conditioned and elegantly maintained.

DSPS hosts shows of area significance, like the recent Fifth Annual Printmakers' Show honoring the late Kay Smith.

An award of $400 was presented to one of the printmakers, Andrea Starkey.

Several artist groups utilize facilities available to DSPS members and offer their friendship to DSPS artists.

DAFA (Dayton Associated Fine Artists) is a group of DSPS members who have met weekly for more than 20 years to paint from a model. The emphasis is on portraiture. They presently meet on Tuesdays at the Peace Art Gallery at 234 Dutoit Street. Donna Brinkman coordinates this group.

The ground floor of 48 High Street Gallery is dedicated art display space. Upstairs in the atelier, the Dayton Academy of Traditional Art led by Jerry Edwards offers artist over age 18 daily instruction and/or shared studio space with shared model fees, M-F 10 am -1 pm. On Friday mornings, Terry Hitt offers weekly 3-hour workshops for a sliding fee, available only to DSPS members.

The Cannery Art Design Center at 434 East 3rd St.

Members in Dayton Society of Painters and Sculptors include teachers and professors, both active and retired, professional artists who earn a living by making artwork, and weekend enthusiasts who want to know others who appreciate making art.
Some members are accomplished artists who have been honored by such groups as American Watercolor Society, Ohio Watercolor Society and other arts organizations recognizing art accomplishments.

Active DSPS artists appreciate sales of their art through DSPS venues. Some sell artwork priced at $1,000 or more, simply by exposure through our online gallery or our three brick-and-mortar locations, or our shows.

What can you find at DSPS that you won't find anywhere else?

  • Enrichment activities to improve your art skills

  • Formal and informal opportunities to meet other like-minded people

  • Volunteer and community service activities

  • Stable, financially- secure, member-run art club organized in 1938

DSPS anticipates hosting Brown Bag Lunches at The 48 High Street Gallery. Check to see if they have been scheduled. For more information, contact Terry Hitt.
